Hi, I’m Kristen
Willow, therapy dog
At Willow & Sage Therapy Collective, I’m a co-owner and co-director alongside my business partner, Maria. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist providing therapy to clients in California, Illinois, and Wisconsin. I work individually with tweens, teens, and adults, and I also offer relationship counseling for couples, polycules, families, and close interpersonal connections of all kinds. I also have been supervising newer clinicians since 2021. Willow, my dog and unofficial therapy assistant, is the inspiration behind the name of our collective—she’s a daily reminder of resilience, groundedness, and companionship.
I believe deeply in therapy and in the healing power of community and connection. As a therapist, I show up as a real person—not a blank slate—and prioritize building an authentic, collaborative relationship with each client. I strive to create a space where people can explore their inner worlds with honesty and curiosity, knowing they’re met with empathy, respect, and humor.
My therapeutic approach is eclectic and tailored to the individual or relationship in front of me. There is no one-size-fits-all model, and I draw from a variety of frameworks to meet the unique needs of my clients. These include relational Gestalt, trauma-informed care, client-centered approaches, strength-based work, CBT, psychodynamic theory, and narrative therapy. I’m trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and the Community Resiliency Model (CRM), which I incorporate when working with trauma. My ongoing personal study of mindfulness and meditation also influences how I conceptualize healing and presence.
Clients often seek therapy with me to address anxiety, depression, grief/loss, existential issues, ADHD, trauma, substance use, self harm, life transitions, identity issues, and relationship challenges. I also work with couples and people in monogamous, polyamorous, or ethically non-monogamous (ENM) relationships, using frameworks like the Gottman Method to support emotional intimacy, communication, and trust.
My work is grounded in cultural humility, and I strive to create a space that is inclusive and affirming of all identities. I have particular experience working with LGBTQ+ clients and those navigating identity, systemic oppression, and belonging. At its core, my work is about fostering awareness, resilience, and meaningful connection—with ourselves and with others.
"I had this wild idea: What if I wanted to thrive, as myself? What would thriving fully as myself mean?"
